The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) was established in 1966 as an initiative of the World Bank to administer international investment disputes. The institution is based in Washington, D.C. ICSID is available to administer conciliation and arbitration proceedings aiming to solve Investor-State disputes and State-State disputes under Bilateral Investment Treaties, Multilateral Investment Treaties, and free trade agreements.

ICSID offers rules specially designed for solving international investment disputes. Its two main instruments are

  • the ICSID Convention, which sets the procedural framework for conciliation and arbitration proceedings revolving around disputes between ICSID Member States and investors that qualify as nationals of these countries; and
  • the ICSID Additional Facility Rules, which authorizes ICSID to administer proceedings that fall outside the scope of the ICSID Convention
